When Books Open New Paths: The Creation of the School Library at Dokimi Primary School

There are moments in a school’s life that go far beyond reports, documents, and numbers. Moments that become part of a community’s collective memory. The creation of the School Library at Dokimi Primary School is one such moment — a milestone of learning, culture, and educational equity, made possible through the generous support of The Hellenic Initiative Canada (THI Canada).

In Greece, for generations, a simple yet powerful phrase has been passed down with hope and wisdom:
“Learn, my child, to read and write.”

Guided by this timeless belief, a long-held dream finally became reality. With THI Canada’s meaningful support, our school community worked with dedication, perseverance, and collaboration to offer our children not merely a room filled with books, but a living center of knowledge, culture, and equal opportunity.

📚 Vision and Purpose

The goal of this project was to create a modern, functional, and pedagogically meaningful school library that promotes literacy and a love of reading, supports the national curriculum, reduces educational inequalities, and serves as a bridge between the school and the local community.

Our new school library is not simply a physical space. It is a place of imagination, inspiration, encounter, and belonging — a place where children can dream, explore, learn, and feel that the world of knowledge truly belongs to them.

🏫 The Space

A specially prepared 114-square-meter room was carefully cleaned, redesigned, and transformed into a warm, bright, and safe environment for reading and study. The Parents’ Association, a constant ally of the school, worked side by side with our educators throughout the process.

The atmosphere was enriched with murals inspired by books and imagination, created collaboratively by teachers Eleni Velaeti, Ioanna Areti Kontopanou, and Georgia Douka, along with parents Vlachopanou–Gioti, Spyropoulou–Kokkotou, Zacharopoulou–Bakothanasi, and Vasilaki–Stavropoulou. Their contribution is a living reminder that education is a shared responsibility

The total cost of the project amounted to €8,398.34, fully utilized with absolute transparency and in full compliance with public procurement regulations. Behind every bookshelf and every book lies a story of persistence, accountability, and respect for public institutions — ensuring that every euro was transformed into knowledge and opportunity for our children.

The donation was raised through THI Canada New Leaders, during an event organized by the Accelerate Greece program on October 4, 2024.

👩‍🏫 Who Benefits

The school library serves 144 students (Grades 1–6), 25 educators and support staff, students in the Reception Class (ZEP I), students in Inclusive Education as well as the wider local community of Dokimi.

For many children who lack access to books or the internet at home, the school library is their only window to the world of knowledge. In this sense, it plays a vital role in promoting educational equity and social inclusion.

🌱 Educational and Social Impact

The library strengthens reading culture and language development, increases student engagement and motivation, supports differentiated teaching, promotes cultural identity and local history, and deepens the bond between school and community.

As a Greek proverb wisely says: “Books are silent teachers.” In Dokimi, these “silent teachers” have finally found the home they deserve.

🤝 Sustainability and the Future

The school library is officially integrated into the weekly timetable and will continue to grow and evolve through volunteer support, collaboration with the Municipality of Agrinio, book exchanges with the National Library of Greece, and donations from local partners.

Future plans include an early readers’ corner, digital literacy initiatives, storytelling sessions, and opening the library further to the community.

🙏 Acknowledgments

We conclude with deep gratitude and heartfelt thanks to The Hellenic Initiative Canada, whose trust and vision invested not only in a space, but in the future of our children.

Your support did not simply build a library. It created hope, opportunity, and a shared belief that education can change lives. Your contribution will continue to illuminate paths of knowledge for generations to come.
